“Toni Honi,” a solo drag and experimental theater performance, debuted at Thundershark Gallery from May 29 — 31, 2026. This is a fictional work about love, capitalism, heritage, ICE, queer joy, who gets to belong and at what cost. The performance incorporates drag, video art, animation, comic panels, and political theater. I played all characters using pre-recorded and projected videos on stage while I performed live in conjunction with the video projection.
The characters represent parts of me and my Vietnamese American heritage. Toni grew up in a conservative Catholic household, navigating inherited values that were never entirely yours, loving your family and disagreeing with them, finding your politics slowly. Honi is exploring Queerness, drag, community-building and leftist values. They both fall in love through dance, but then Toni’s low-paying job and Honi’s immigration status turn the love story tragic. Content warning for sexual images.
