This is a painting about family dynamics and talking politics over dinner. I referred to images I saw in Hong Kong including the food and Eddie Colla’s wheatpaste. Warhol’s Mao inspired the streetscape and the matching image of the current Chinese president.
“Don’t Swim on an Empty Stomach” is about Hong Kong and mainland China. This is about one country, two systems with a national security law. This is about a disagreement between a father who was “Freedom Swimmer” and their protesting son.
